Menurut Chemguide, asam kuat melepaskan ion hidrogen ketika dilarutkan dalam air hingga terionisasi secara sempurna. Contohnya : Asam klorida (HCl), Asam nitrat (HNO3), Asam sulfat (H2SO4), Asam klorat (HClO3), Asam perklorat (HClO4), Asam bromida (HBr) dan Asam hidrogen iodida (HI)<\/li>\n<li>Asam lemah adalah dengan pH di bawah tujuh dan di atas tiga yang tidak terionisasi secara sempurna dalam air. Fenomena ini terjadi akibat kadar gas Belerang Dioksida (SO2) dan Nitrogen Oksida (NO) di atmosfer sangat tinggi. Gas ini kemudian bereaksi dengan air di atmosfer membentuk asam sulfat, asam nitrat dan senyawa asam lain. Ketika hujan, reaksi ini membuat air yang turun jadi lebih asam dari keadaan normal.
